Can i apply for a visa without going to the consulate?

I'm about to apply for a spanish student visa, and on the web site it said to apear in person, but the closest one is 12 hours away in houston, so i was wondering if anyone knows of a way (besides using a lawyer) to apply for it without going? Thanks!
