Can I get the free version of XBOX Live and still be able to update Red Dead Redemption?

So, I used cheat (don't give me grief about it, I did it so I could just run around not worrying about anything, not because it was hard) and now I can't save. I need to know if I can get the free version of XBOX Live to get an update for the game that will allow it to save while cheats are being used. So if I get the free version of XBOX Live, can I update Red Dead Redemption?
