Help with Ubuntu, it wont boot up!!?

I have ubuntu 10.10 and i am a total linux newbie. I NEVER use the terminal. So when I boot it up it says that no init is found. And to try init= bootarg. But when i type that in it doesn't do anything! I probably sound like such a idiot but i wanted to get used to linux. So please HELP!
