Trying to stop x server on Ubuntu using (/etc/init.d/gdm stop) but doesn't work?

Did you put the sudo prefix before the whole command? Because if not, then you won't be able to run scripts whether they're from the x-server service or from the driver installer. You can type it in a terminal launched in the very GUI or in another TTY session.
